seen as how this is the last week of college and everything is winding down a bit i would like to take this opportunity to thank the lecturers and the students for a great experience and i never thought that i would learn so much in what feels like a short time although it is almost the end of a school year.

i had so much fun and learned so much that it feels like its only been a week or two.ive made lots of friends and i have changed alot .

cant wait for next year.

Before christmas I seen a stall in the c block about tvp which ultimately means Tanzania Volunteer Project.

It is set up by a two people Wes O Brian and Ciara Whelan ,past students of itb who have spent time volunteering in africa.

I had always wanted to volunteer in a foriegn country but it was always going to be in a couple of years but when i seen tvp and seen the way they help you and the way it isnt to expensive i ask my mam and she said , I should go for it .

So on the 11th of July im flying off to tanzania to help out with some building or maintanence and I can not wait.

A lot of preparation has gone in to it i had to buy my ticket and insurance and injections and I also have to learn as much swahilli as I can.

I have to admit I am a bit scared but I think it is going to be a chance of a life time and if it goes well i could go back again.

As we didn’t have a guest-speaker we were told to look at the videos that lynda.com offers on Creative Inspirations.

The video I looked at was on a dude called Simone Legno who is an Italian based artist from rome who is the creator of the brand Tokidoko. Tokidoko’s style is well known for having a large emphasis of it’s inpiration from Japenese Culture and everyday life as Simone has always been in love with it. You can see this throughout his work.

Some of the main characters are

  • Adios
  • Mozirella
  • & SANDy

Adios is so dark and mysterious looking! I think he was my favourite!

Creating A Character

-Tokidoko’s most infamous Characters Mozzirella :

A really enjoyable part of this installment of creative inspirations was the part where Simone shows you how he goes about animating a character in Adobe Illustartor ( which we have used quite alot this semester as part of Working In Digital Media) But yeah the mad thing I thought was that Simone starts drawing all of his characters in the many sketch books he has! Which you see throughout the video.

So he normally starts of designing a character like this; He would have a few drawings of an Idea for a character, applying his own italian heritage but also mixing it up with the Japenese style he has grown well acustomed to! (this you can tell by the itialian-esque name of this character Mozerella) So after this he takes a photo of the sketch on his Iphone. Next stage: Uploads it to his computer and then brings it into Adobe Illustartor and begins animating his character digitally from there.

In Illustartor he use’s a mixture of tools from the pen tool to many different other tools also applying colour etc. I really liked watching this because it shows you how easy it really is. Doing things like this is definately something I’d like to get into down the line, hopefully we will be doing stuff like this as are course progress’s over the next few years but for now almost Summer wooo!

After watching these video’s I looked up the company Tokidoko on youtube and found some cool video’s on the characters, I really like the dark look of the dude Adios, he looks Savage!

Video

I really like the way he’s so modest with his work, I mean the part of the video Interview where he says something like ” be humble and you’ll always be ahead” was what made me really like him.

Overall really enjoyed these video’s.. was always interested to see how the create characters like the Hello Kitty franchise.

Digital Imaging

So here are some photos I took when we were let loose with the cameras for Digital Imaging last week;

In this module we expanded are knowlege of Adobe Photoshop; I really enjoyed this module and feel more comforatable in photoshop now.
Here’s some other stuff we did:
  • We were asked to re-create this poster design for Mr.Cigar ( a coffee beans and cigar supplier)
  • We also had to re-make Stephen’s very tedious poster for a fictiousvRadio Station for ITB Creative Digital Media Students

Poster for Radio Station

Last week we had our mock interviews; A thing that I personally was dreading because I am generally a very modest and intravertial person.

Although I did feel prepared after the very informative lecture are class recieved from maria and alot of my own preparation.

The lecture with Maria was a great help in preparing us for the interview. She told us some key points that we needed to know going in for the interview which I took on board for example

  1. Know your CV – Because some people embarrasingly forget what they write on there CV THIS IS NOT GOOD
  2. Dress to Impress – First Impressions really do matter
  3. Finally Research, Research and more Research – Look uo everything you know about the company, it will impress possible soon to be employers!

The day of the Interview I was rearing to go and couldnt wait for the Interview. When I got in there I let losse and really gave it my all, I dont know whether I did well or anything but i certainly enjoyed and will put it up there with one of lifes learning expieences

I am normally a closed book , but in that interview I felt like someone else…. it was geat.

I was first in a team with James Ciaran and Luke until we sort of had creative differences and also I noticed that Aza and Victor only had the two of them so I switched teams, for everybody sake.

Anyway Myself, Victor & Az decided to do a car chase for our stop motion. I had seen many car chases scenes done on stop motion on you tube and most of them were  not very good , so i decided to have a look at what they got wrong and to not do that.

An example of Some videos we looked up!

One of the main things was that the set never looked real so myself aza and victor spent a long time planing and putting together a set that looked real , and to scale.we did this by useing print outs of real streets and pasting them to cardboard this didnt look great up close but we used some clever camera angles to make it look more real.

at the end of our story we had a cliff scene and that was really hard to contruct with just cardbourd so me and the lads went down to the harbour which is about two minutes form my house and used some more clever camera angels and tricks to make it look as real as posssible. nd granted in the end it didnt look what i would have wantedbut it did look reasonable.

In the end we  had a blast and it was a great expierence.

BPM MEDIA

ROBBIE WARD

robbie wards main buisness is influencing purchases in bars clubs and food restuarants with digital media.he would mainly use in venue advertisement or music videos with writing on the bottom to do this.

robbie ward says that content is king in other words what you use is very important.

robbie talked about how tesco’s would use catchy tunes to make people forget how long they have been in there .

or in a cafe they would use fast brass music followed by acoustic music., it all depends on what you want your customer to do .

robbie would normally go for ques or high traffic areas to out his adds in so lots of people would see it.

Digital Media

On the 23rd of march we had a field trip to the Oireachtas;

Its not that I didnt enjoy the trip because I actually enjoyed it very much but I failed to see the connection between politics and our course, but if the lecturers think it will help then it must be helpful.

We started with a complimentary cup of tea but since we paid in it wasnt really a free cup if you think about  it. I thought i tour guide was really down to earth and knew lots of facts about the place.

The architecture was absolutely sublime and brought me back to the time when I learned a little bit of architecture in school. Some of the art was beautiful.

After the tour of the dail we had a few hours to kill so I suggested that me and the lads go to the bad ass cafe and have a burger.

The bad ass cafe has a large place in my heart because when  my grandparents would bring me in to town to go shopping or to the Cinema and they would always bring me there and my grandfather would explain to me how he built half of dublin city . (which he did)

During the meal I relised that we would still have a long time to wait so I suggested that we went to the national history museum and had an oul mosey round for a while.

We eventually made it to the science museum after a lot of direction asking .the exhibit was a mix of science and art. these people were using ar such as crochet making to explain the presence of hyperbolic space in the natural world , because before this scientists thought and proved that hyperbolic space wasnt in the natural world.

This one scientist found that there was hyperbolic space in the natural world only found in coral reefs .but because coral reefs are so endangered you cant go around ripping up coral reefs, so thats where the crochet comes in.these people try to explain hyperbolic space by  using art and crochet.

semester 2

working in digital media

fiona kelly

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with
inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films,
music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random
conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds,
bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from
that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft)
will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent.
And don’t bother concealing your thievery
- celebrate it if you feel like it.”
Jim Jarmusch

fiona kelly talked to us about where and how to get inpiration.she told us about websites like istock photo, del.icio.us, twitter and digg.fiona told us about all the websites she designed and how and where she got her inspiration

for instance for one website she made for vespa scooters she used over 20 different images from various places just to make one symbol.

what she mainly does is looks at pictures and other stuff to give herself an idea of what she wants , then she puts all the ideas together to make her one .

i dont particularly agree with her methods , i would agree with taking inspiration from other people but it seems to me that she takes direct inspiration from other people work , in other words literaly taking peoples ideas.

although it seems to be a main skill in this business so maybe i should try to agree with it a little more than i do .

my7 favourite bit of the lecture was when she showed us her banner ad she made for myhome.ie .i really liked it and thought it was cool, i would have like to see it before we did our banner ads , because i could have really took some inpiration form it .
